Clean Truck Check

What is the Clean Truck Check and why do I need it?

Senate Bill 210 (Leyva; Chapter 298, Statutes of 2019) directed CARB to develop and implement a comprehensive heavy-duty vehicle inspection and maintenance (HD I/M) regulation to ensure that vehicles’ emissions control systems are properly functioning when traveling on California’s roadways. To meet CARB compliance testing requirements, emissions compliance testing must be performed by a CARB credentialed tester. Passing tests may be submitted by the tester up to 90 days prior to the vehicle’s compliance deadline, allowing time for any necessary repairs.

The emissions compliance testing requirements will take effect starting on October 1, 2024. All compliance deadlines of January 1, 2025, or later will require a passing compliance test, including a clean truck check, to be submitted as part of their compliance demonstration. Vehicles may submit tests no more than 90 days prior to their compliance deadlines.

Nearly all diesel and alternative fuel heavy-duty trucks, buses, and other vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating over 14,000 pounds that operate in California must undergo CTC scans. Affected vehicles include hybrid trucks and buses, commercial vehicles, privately-owned vehicles, government vehicles, and vehicles registered outside of California* (Possibly over-ruled) that operate on CA public roads and highways.

Non-compliance may result in DMV registration blocks and other enforcement actions, including issues related to OBD testing service.
